Sangalaki, Derawan, Maratua & Kakaban

Sangalaki:

Sangalaki Island, is one of the few islands in the world where you can dive & snorkel with Mantas almost every day of the year. Manta Point, Manta Run and the Cleaning Station are must do dive sites. There are over 500 varieties of soft and hard coral in the reefs surrounding the island and is known for the largest nesting populations of green turtles. The island is surrounded by a shallow lagoon, most dives here are shallow (5-20m) and the manta rays are usual seen feeding for plankton. Guests can even see mantas while having a coffee during the surface interval - coffee breaks don’t get much better! Diving here is a manta-tastic experience!

KAKABAN:

Kakaban Island is famous around the world for its non-stinging jellyfish lake! It is one of very few places in the world where you can swim with stingless jellyfish. For both divers and non divers, this place is not to be missed!

Please note that as the lake is a national park you will need to pay the entrance fee on arrival which is IDR 25’000 (cash only please)

With untouched coral structures in the shallow & steep walls dropping hundreds of metres, one can see crazy macro-critters and a high chance of pelagic encounters. Spending time with the residential schools of barracuda and jackfish are a highlight,

Kakaban has incredible drift dives such as Meditation Wall, where you can simply just go with the current and watch the wall whilst spotting thousands of schooling fish, sharks, rays and turtles on the way. Sites such as Kakabanana, which is great for slowing down and spotting some cool macro life – in fact we named this dive site after the “banana nudibranch” also keep your eyes peeled for critters such as pygmy seahorses, frogfish and octopus!

Due to the strong currents we recommend that Kakaban is dived by Advanced Open water divers or above or Open Water divers with a minimum of 20 logged dives.

Derawan:

The island should really be called “Turtle Island”! Apart from the many turtle encounters there is some amazing macro diving here,eg. stone fish, seahorses, flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus etc as well as schooling jackfish and some enormous giant clams. You can decide whether you want to dive with lots of turtles or spend your time looking for rare critters,

Maratua:

Maratua Island offers vertical walls dives with pristine coral, strong currents and lots of BIG pelagics. Rays are also common here, especially eagle rays, devil rays and giant stingrays. Schooling barracuda, dogtooth tuna, spanish mackerel, jackfish, bumphead parrotfish and napoleon wrasse are some other species you may encounter.

Dive sites such as Gorgonzola and Light house showcases some pristine corals in the shallows and diving deeper you may have encounters with sharks, especially white-tips, leopard and grey reef sharks.

Proposed Itinerary

  • CHECK IN: 30th May,2022 - Reach Tarakan from Jakarta & take the 12pm transfer boat to Derawan.

  • DIVING DAYS: 31st May - 5th June, 2022; 6 days 18 dives Sangalaki, Derawan, Maratua & Kakaban.

  • CHECK OUT: 6th June,2022 - Depart Derawan at 8.30am boat to Tarakan & take afternoon flight to Jakarta.

    A Typical Diving Day:

Breakfast starts at 7am in our “Chill Out Zone”. Enjoy your morning coffee or tea and your favorite type of eggs and/or fruit while enjoying a 360 degree view of the Celebes sea - don’t be surprised to see turtles while enjoying your breakfast.

At 8am all divers meet at our private jetty. Once on the boat you will be given an orientation and boat briefing. Your dive gear will be set up by the dive team. If you would prefer to set up your own gear then arrive 15 minutes earlier.

Between each dive we will have at least one hour surface interval before the next dive.

The surface intervals here are usually amazing! It’s not uncommon to see manta rays swimming past the boat while having a coffee between dives at Sangalaki Island.

At Kakaban we will take you to the famous Jellyfish lake, while at most other islands you can relax, enjoy a coffee and some snacks on a beautiful and often deserted tropical beach. At Scuba Junkie Sangalaki a perfect dive day is 3 amazing dives with a mix of very interesting and relaxed surface intervals in between.

For the boats that are visiting the islands of Sangalaki, Kakaban or Maratua we will go out all day and do three dives. Two dives in the morning followed by lunch, and one in the afternoon before returning to our water bungalow resort at Derawan Island. For boats that are diving around Derawan Island we will usually return to the resort after each dive (but this depends on the tides).
